As well as gallivanting around the world writing travel books I also still do a bit of advertising work. Most of the time I’m flogging mechanics or hamburgers or trucks or new property developments. But, sometimes I get to make ads that make a difference. Along with fellow creatives Tony Hardy and Monique Aidone at Frontier Advertising we created the new TV/cinema campaign for Youth Beyond Blue - the national depression initiative. Depression and anxiety are among the most common mental health problems experienced by young people and often the symptoms aren’t recognised and therefore young people don’t get the help that’s needed. Sometimes, the signs can be ignored or passed over as ‘just part of growing up’. Our ‘job’ was to encourage people to Look, Listen, Talk and Seek Help about depression and anxiety.  We started with a ‘brief’ from the client then, using research from depression sufferers, wrote scripts and a print campaign. Our campaign theme is ‘Finding a way back from depression’. So, without further ado, here are the ads:
