Sleeping Around goes on sale today! (or last week)

January 5th, 2009

My new book ‘Sleeping Around – A Couch Surfing Tour of the Globe’ hits the shelves in Australia today! Although some bookshops have been selling it for a while apparently. I’ve had quite a few emails from readers who had not only already bought it, but had finished reading it. Everyone has been very complimentary so far, though, which is always nice. I also got my first review from ‘Australian Bookseller & Publisher magazine’ which went like this:

Brian Thacker is no newcomer to the writing of a great travel narrative, having previously penned such greats as Rule No. 5: No Sex on the Bus, Where’s Wallis? and I’m not Eating any of that Foreign Muck. His new book is a tour of the globe while couch surfing. For those new to couch surfing, it stems from a website called CouchSurfing.com. People across the world post a profile and invite travellers to come and stay on their couch for free. Not only does one get the free accommodation but more than likely the couch owner will show you around and take you out to get a feel for their town and country. An ingenuous idea for a book, this did not disappoint. Full of humour and interesting characters, the book gives some great insight into each country and couch host (as well as couch) he visits. The entertaining Sleeping Around should appeal to both real and armchair travellers. It is also a great book for a humour reader and it should inspire a whole raft of newcomers to the cult couch surfing craze. It really is a great way of meeting people and experiencing a country through a local’s perspective!

I am always very happy (and relieved) when I get a good review. Admittedly, I’ve only ever had a ‘few’ bad reviews for my books, but when you get them they really do hurt. So much so in fact, that you feel like finding out where the reviewer lives and fire bombing their house (and no it’s not just me, I’ve spoken to a few authors who feel the same way – in fact it was an author friend who suggested the brilliant fire bombing idea). So if there are any reviewers out there reading this blog – just thought you’d like to know that I’ve been making Molotov Cocktails in the garage.

    Hiya!

I love the new book. I’ve read the Chile bit so far and I’m loving it. If you wanted to experience the sea around Valparaiso you should have taken a very brief taxi ride to Vina del Mar (Vine of the Sea), just to the north.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I bought my copy of the book in a bookshop on the Gold Coast before Christmas although I noticed that the page with the publisher’s details says that the book was first published in 2009.

    Keep up the good work,

    Jonathon Sprott
