I took my wife to Indonesia.

Jakarta?

No, she came on her own accord.

I’m in Jakarta at the moment and sweating in my underpants. It has been a great adventure so far travelling using the original 1974 Lonely Planet ‘Southeast Asia on a shoestring’ but, boy, am I over being constantly sticky. Many of the guesthouses and hotels listed in the original book are still there and many of them still have the same 1974 electric fan in the corner that flaps weakly towards the 1974 bed with the 1974 sheets. I suppose I shouldn’t really complain when my hotel right in the heart of central Jakarta is all of $5.20 a night.

At one place I stayed in, though, I did lose an entire packet of biscuits. Well, I didn’t actually lose them – the rats in my room ate them all. I could hear nibbling during the night, but I think it always best to ignore noises in the night or you don’t get any sleep.

At least I’ve only got the 12,000 mosquitos to worry about in my Jakarta hotel room.

Bloody hell. You’ve sunk to the depths now. I can’t wait for the chapters on chicago, jamaica and that time you played tennis in Africa with a couple of black men.
    Hope all is well mate.

Brian!!! I have just been introduced to your books by a friend of mine who said she was glared at horribly at Melbourne Airport because she couldnt stop laughing (in a good way)while reading ‘Where’s Wallis’….You are great, and I am inspired by your travelling and wish I could come along for the ride! I am off to Bali on Saturday to be a bogan for two weeks. Its my first commercial travel expereince and I am slightly scared..what happens if I come back with a Bintang Tshirst and stubby holder!! Good luck on your travels and cant wait to read more.

    Hi Emma

I’ll be in Kuta in two weeks time as well. Look out for me. I’ll be the bloke with no shirt on standing on the bar singing Khe Sanh. Oh, wait a minute that will be every Australian in Kuta!

I haven’t been to Kuta before, so I assume I’ll be drinking at the Beauty Bonza Fair Dinkim Koala Kangaroo Bar (or something similar!).

    Hi Brian,
Try the bounty – great for MONSTER cocktails/junglejuice/gasoline. Will be in Kuta around the same time so will keep an eye out.
