Holidays with Sheep!

November 28th, 2009

Sheep!I was in the newsagency  today checking out travel magazines and by gosh is there a lot to choose from. I remember a few years back (okay it was quite a few years back) when there was Vogue Entertaining + Travel and that was about it. There were over 30 different titles in my local newsagency covering just about everything to do with travel (except holidaying with sheep – which you think would be a big hit in New Zealand). There are travel magazines targeting couples, travelling with kids, retirees, luxury travel, backpacking, walking holidays, cruise holidays, island holidays and even one called Italianicious. Even Lonely Planet, the Sunday Times and CNN have their own travel magazines.

But what was missing, though, was a travel magazine devoted to boar hunting holidays around the world. Because there are certainly enough magazines about boar hunting. On the shelf in my local newsagency there were four separate magazines (published IN Australia) devoted entirely to boar hunting (okay, I was a little bored, so I walked around the newsagency trying to find wacky magazine titles). They included ‘Aussie Boar Hunters’, ‘Wild Boar Australia’, ‘Boar it up ya’ and ‘Bacon Busters’ (and I swear I didn’t make those last two up – here’s proof). Boar It Up Ya
Bacon Busters I personally have never met anyone who hunts boars, but it must be so popular that there is enough demand for four different publications.

In my aimless wandering around the magazines I also found some other great titles. There was ‘Sheep’ (’The voice of the Independent Flockmasters’), ‘Classic Tractor’, ‘Model Helicopter’, ‘Tactical Knives’ (that one looked scary) and one called ‘Passage Maker’ (and no, not a gay mag, but a magazine about tug boats – although there is magazine called A Bear’s Life’ that isn’t about furry animals that eat honey). A Bear's Life My personal favourite, and one that I have immediately subscribed to, is’Broom and Mop News’.

Then again, none of them come close to out and out weirdness (and no pun intended) of a magazine I picked up in a shop in Amsterdam a few years back. The magazine was called ‘Fist Fuckers Monthly’. Now, fair enough there are folk out there – a worry in itself – who’ll buy a one-off magazine devoted to well… you get the drift, but MONTHLY!

Maybe they could combine a couple of those titles – I reckon there would be a huge market for a magazine called ‘Boar Fuckers Monthly’

    Hey brian

loved the blog! I worked at WH Smith for a while in the UK and would laugh so much at some of the titles that came in. Here are a few ones (that I still remember)…

    All About Soap
    Girls & Corpses
    Cranes Today Magazine
    Bank Note Reporter

    keep up the good work
