Flights for $3 (inclusive of taxes and toilets)

The queue for the toilet.

I’m off to Bali next month with my girlfriend Beth and I started looking at flights today. And being somewhat frugal I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the cheapest way to get there. After way too much time searching around I did find a cheap way, but it does mean detouring quite a bit. If we fly to KL with Air Asia (for $139 one way from Melbourne) we can get a flight from KL to Bali for $35. I’m not sure If we’ll do it because we’d have to pay for accommodation in KL and it does seem a lot of mucking about when we can fly direct to Bali in 6 hours, but boy wouldn’t it be fun being an ex-pat in KL. I’d be going to a different country every weekend if I worked in Malaysia. You could fly from KL to Singapore for $10, Krabi for $20 and Ho Chi Minh City for $25, plus just about everywhere else in Asia for you special price. Or you could fly to Penang for $10 then fly to Langawi for $3 (inclusive of all taxes).

Then again, if you lived in London (well, North London near Stanstead preferably) you could go away every week for $11.54 (all inclusive) with Ryan Air. For your $11.54 you can fly to Turin, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Gdansk, Oslo, Aarhus, Krakow and somewhere called Szczecin. Just don’t go to the toilet. Ryan Air have recently announced that they are planning to charge passengers ₤1 to use the toilet. Well, I suppose there’s one good thing about that – at least I wouldn’t feel so bad when I wee all over the floor.

I’m still searching for cheap flights and checking out all the Low Cost Carriers (or LCC as they call them in the trade) and I just found out that it is now possible to fly around the world entirely on low-cost carriers. You can fly from Melbourne to Honolulu on JetStar, Honolulu to Vancouver on WestJet, Vancouver to London-Gatwick on Flyglobespan, London-Stansted to Kuala Lumpur on Air Asia X, Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on Air Asia, and Singapore to Melbourne on Tiger. I don’t know what price you’d get, but I’d love to find out!

I’d love to live in Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur and make the most of the discount airfare situation. Of course it can cost more to get a taxi to the airport than a plane to another country, but the value is there if you can deal with the inconvenience.

I did try a low-cost fare hop from Melbourne to Bangkok a few years ago when Tiger Airways used Darwin as a hub. Melbourne to Darwin, Darwin to Singapore, Singapore to Bangkok. It took 18 hours in transit, three pages in my passport and every ounce of my tolerance. I was so tired when I arrived I had to sleep for two days. I have never done that again. I love Air Asia for short haul legs, but long haul on Air Asia X was tragically disappointing.

So these days I don’t mind spending the money with Thai International and getting a great seat, great service, great food, great movies, great legroom, great luggage allowance, etc etc – and having them sort out the problems when a plane is late or cancelled. Money isn’t everything!
