Two library events and a nasi goreng.
Sunday, May 24th, 2009
Look how excited everyone is! That’s because I’m doing two library events this week complete with slide show and ‘witty’ tales about my latest book Sleeping Around. You can catch me at Pakenham Library on Tuesday May 26th at 7.00pm and at Athenaeum Library in the city on Wednesday May 27th at 1.00pm. For full details check out my events page. I’ll also be selling and signing books, which you can then sell on ebay for thousands of dollars.
And for those that can’t make it to Melbourne this week why not come hear me talk in Bali… (read more)
An adventurous journey around the world.

That’s the title of my new book. Well, the German translation of my latest book. It’s called ‘Couch Surfing – Eine abenteuerliche Reise um die Welt’ (or translated into English: ‘Couch Surfing – An adventurous journey around the world.’) And this is the cover. (For ALL my loyal German readers the book will out in late September – check it out here). At least I know what the translation is! In the Thai translation of ‘Rule No.5: No sex on the bus’ I have no idea what the title of the book is. And the Thai’s don’t have a very good track record for book and film title translations. Here are some recent Thai translations of books and films… (read more)

I have some wunderbar news for ALL of my German fans! Sleeping Around is currently being translated (by a German fellow living in Mexico) for a September launch through Eichborn Publishing in Germany. I think the book could be quite popular over there (which is good for me!) because the Germans love Couch Surfing. Out of the 232 ‘Unique Countries Represented’ Germany comes it at number two for the most members with 89,727 (behind the Americans). And, out of the 55,205 cities represented, Berlin comes in at number three (behind Paris and London) with 12,659 members… (read more)
For those that missed my launch…

… and missed me rambling and waffling on about my new book then you can listen to me rambling and waffling on about my new book on the radio. The first interview was on ABC Life Matters (listen here) – with special guest, live via satellite, my Icelandic Couch Surfing host Smari McCarthy). The other interview was on Melbourne ABC 774 (listen here) with Richard Stubbs. And if you haven’t had enough of me by then you can listen to me live on JOY 94.9 this Saturday at 12.00 midday (Melbourne time) or listen anywhere in the world on the live-streaming- thingy online… (read more)
A very hot book launch.
Sunday, February 1st, 2009
I’ve only just cooled down enough from my book launch on Thursday night to finally update my blog! And what a scorcher of a night it was (in both respects!). Half an hour before kick-off it was 43.1 degrees (110 in the old money) and I was worried that folk would be sitting under their ACs at home rather than coming out and tackling the heat. But, bless them all, about 70 people risked dehydration and heat stroke to hear me waffle on about sleeping around the globe. The other problem with a hot night is that the bar tab soon ran out because… (read more)
The Melbourne Couch Surfing Summer Fest.
Thursday, January 22nd, 2009
It’s only one week till the ‘official’ launch of ‘Sleeping Around – A couch surfing tour of the globe’. And although the book has been in bookshops for a couple of weeks I timed my launch to coincide with the 1st Melbourne CS Summer Fest. According to the Summer Fest website: ‘The Melbourne CouchSurfing Summer Fest 2009 is about celebrating our CouchSurfing community and showcasing to the world how amazing Melbourne really is!’ Events in the week-long celebration (which begins this weekend on the 24th) include a Graffiti Party, a Scavenger Hunt, an Afternoon of Lawn Bowls, a Puffing Billy day trip and an International Potluck dinner. Melbourne isn’t the first city to hold a Couch surfing ‘Fest’, however. Other cities to hold a ‘Fest’ include London (with a ‘Wild Disco Night’)… (read more)

There is a new addition to my website. The ‘Sleeping Around’ mini-site is up and running (just click on the book over there in the bottom right hand corner). On the site you will find the blurb for the book, an extract, links to all the ‘couch surfing’ sites, a link to buy the book online (feel free use that one as often as you like!) and my photo album page with over 150 photos from my Grand Couch Surfing Tour of the Globe. Amongst them you will find photos of small people devouring huge slabs of meat… (read more)
Radio interviews and dripping snot.
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009
I had my first radio interview this morning for ‘Sleeping Around’ with Tim Cox on ABC Hobart. It’s the first of many interviews on the publicity junket for the book. Except there isn’t much junket-ing going on because they didn’t actually fly me to Hobart. I went into the ABC studios in Melbourne and sat in a tiny room called ‘The Tardis’ and spoke ‘live’ to Tim in the studio in Hobart. It was also for ABC Hobart that I did my first ever radio interview for ‘Rule No.5: No sex on the bus’ about eight years ago. That interview went quite well particularly since I had a bad cold and had to keep wiping my dripping nose with my sleeve. But, I did make a bit of an ass of myself in the middle of the interview, however… (read more)
Sleeping Around goes on sale today! (or last week)

My new book ‘Sleeping Around – A Couch Surfing Tour of the Globe’ hits the shelves in Australia today! Although some bookshops have been selling it for a while apparently. I’ve had quite a few emails from readers who had not only already bought it, but had finished reading it. Everyone has been very complimentary so far, though, which is always nice. I also got my first review from ‘Australian Bookseller & Publisher magazine’ which went like this:
Brian Thacker is no newcomer to the writing of a great travel narrative, having previously penned such greats as Rule No. 5: No Sex on the Bus, Where’s Wallis? and I’m not Eating any of that Foreign Muck… (read more)
Launch Party for ‘Sleeping Around’ and free beer.
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008
As part of the Melbourne Couch Surfing Summer Fest I will be launching my new book ‘Sleeping Around’. The date is Thursday the 29th of January at a venue to be announced (I’m trying to find a good bar in Melbourne that’s full of couches!). I’ll be supplying beer and wine (until the bar tab runs out) and I’ll do a reading… then you all buy my books! The Melbourne CS Summer Fest is… I’ll just let them describe it:
CouchSurfers of Melbourne are hosting a week long CouchSurfing Festival and are inviting people from all over the world to join them. Come along and be a part of it!… (read more)
