I went out for a drink with 47 year-old John Harwood a fellow traveller and ‘couch surfer’ the other night and after hearing his stories I felt like an absolute travel novice. Yes, I have seen a decent whack of the globe, but John got on his bicycle in Oxford, England and cycled to Australia. AND, he’s not finished yet. He’s also riding through New Zealand then across the States coast to coast before heading home to England. He has already been away for almost two years and in that time has ridden through France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Oman, India… (read more)

That is just one of the delightful names of a ‘racing’ cockroach at the 28th annual Australia day Cockroach Races held in Brisbane, Queensland. I was there a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve been so busy with my launch of my new book and the publicity that I haven’t had time to post a blog about it. I was ‘participating’ in the cocky races as part of a ’special’ project I’m working on. Well, when I say ‘participating’ I didn’t actually race, but my stable of ‘cockroaches’ did. A very hot book launch.

I’ve only just cooled down enough from my book launch on Thursday night to finally update my blog! And what a scorcher of a night it was (in both respects!). Half an hour before kick-off it was 43.1 degrees (110 in the old money) and I was worried that folk would be sitting under their ACs at home rather than coming out and tackling the heat. But, bless them all, about 70 people risked dehydration and heat stroke to hear me waffle on about sleeping around the globe.
